The new Asics Gel Kayano 25 is the 25th iteration of Asics’ popular stability running shoe first seen way back in 1993. It has a reputation for being the most plush stability shoe on the market, and in this store, we have customers who can’t remember wearing any other shoe than the Kayano for ten or more years. Obviously, with so many people wearing the Gel Kayano series, Asics isn’t going to make drastic changes to this iconic shoe.
The women’s shoe is still a 13mm heel to toe drop, while the men’s is still a 10mm drop. That hasn’t changed. The Kayano 25 still has the Duomax in the arch area to help mitigate pronation, but Asics has changed the rest of the midsole up a bit: We now have 2 layers of cushioning , Flight Foam Propel on top and Flight Foam Lite on the bottom. The top layer is responsive, the bottom layer is cushiony- which is why you have all the cushiony foam toward the back, where most people land, and the responsive foam toward the front where most people push off.
The outsole tread design is a bit more aggressive and there’s also more rubber in the big toe area providing a stiffer toe off.
The heel counter is very similar to the old version and provides a snug fit around the heel. The collar is padded and has a luxuriously plush feel. The upper material is breathable and provides a seamless environment for your feet. Most people say that this shoe is a little wider in the forefoot than previous models.
I’ve really enjoyed running in this version of the Kayano. Maybe 3 runs to really feel all the nuances in it, and now its in my every day rotation. If I had to do a lot of walking, say walk around Disney World for a few days, or go on a trip where I expected to walk a lot, I would choose this shoe in a heartbeat. Great shoe for health professionals or anyone on their feet for long periods of time. It’s available in men’s sizes 7-15 and women’s sizes 5-13 , and the retail price is still $160. -Mike
